How to download GTA 6: the only official ways, and why “free” downloads are fake

You can’t download GTA 6 today, free or paid. The game comes out on November 19, 2026, only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the first legal downloads start on November 12 for people who bought the digital version. Those downloads come from the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store on your console. Sites offering GTA 6 for PC, for phones or as a “leaked build” are scams, and some of them install malware.

When can you download GTA 6?

• November 12: digital pre-orders can start downloading (fact). The PlayStation Store lists it as a 7-day pre-load in both editions.
• November 18 and 19: the game unlocks. On PS5 it opens country by country, starting with New Zealand at 11:00 UTC on November 18 (unlock times by region).
• Before the unlock, the downloaded files won’t start. No edition gives early access.

Where to download GTA 6 legally

• PS5: the PlayStation Store, on the console or by buying on the website or app with auto-download switched on.
• Xbox Series X|S: the Microsoft Store.
• The boxed version: there’s no disc inside, only a download code (Rockstar Support). After you redeem it, the game downloads from the same store.
• The Rockstar Store sells codes for both consoles, and the download still happens in the console store (pre-order details).

Rockstar hasn’t published the file size. The 750 GB and 676.7 GB figures that keep circulating aren’t confirmed (how big GTA 6 is). Our pre-load guide walks through the settings on both consoles.

Can you download GTA 6 on PC or a phone?

No. Rockstar hasn’t announced a PC version. GamesBeat reported, citing four sources, that it’s planned for the first quarter of 2027 (is GTA 6 coming to PC). There’s no mobile version either. A file called “GTA 6 PC” or a GTA 6 APK contains whatever the uploader put in it.

What “free” and “leaked” GTA 6 downloads really are

Kaspersky looked at a lot of these sites in a report on October 2 (Kaspersky). The patterns:

• Sites using the name CyberLeek, originally the handle of a leaker, claim to have an early build. One asks $1,000 for the “full version,” $100 for 24 hours of a “demo,” and collects donations to “release” it, all in crypto with no refunds. Others ask you to install an unknown launcher.
• Pages with a big “Try GTA 6” button let you pick a PC, PS5 or Xbox version and download something. Nobody knows what lands on your device.
• Free pre-order codes for your email address. To see the rest of the code you’re sent to install an unrelated app as a “human check.”
• A copy of the Brazilian PlayStation Store takes the real price of 449.90 reais plus your personal and tax details. Russian-language sites sell fake activation codes for 7,000 to 8,500 rubles.
• A $GTAVI crypto token promises holders access to the game. It looks like a typical pump-and-dump meme coin.

In June, iXBT Games reported a fake “PC beta” that installed malware instead of a game (the fake GTA 6 beta).

How not to get caught

• Download only from the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store on your own console.
• Type rockstargames.com, playstation.com or xbox.com yourself instead of following links.
• Don’t pay for an early build, a beta slot or a key on any other site. Rockstar doesn’t sell early access (GTA 6 early access).
• If you’ve already run a file or entered a password, change your passwords and scan the device with a trusted antivirus.
