If you pre-ordered the digital version of GTA 6, you can download it from November 12 and play the moment it unlocks on November 19. Downloading early doesn’t make it playable early: the files stay locked until release in your region. The steps below follow PlayStation’s and Xbox’s own support pages.
How to pre-load GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

Step 1. Check which version you have
Pre-loading from November 12 is for digital pre-orders. The physical edition is a box with a download code inside: once you redeem the code, the game downloads the same way. Details on editions are in GTA 6 editions and pre-orders.
Step 2. Free up space
Rockstar hasn’t announced the file size. The 750 GB and 676.7 GB figures going around are unconfirmed. How to check free space on PS5 and Xbox, and the calculator for download time, are in how big is GTA 6 and on our release page.
Step 3. PS5: turn on auto-download
Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates and turn on Auto-Download. To let the console download while it sleeps, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet (PlayStation Support).
Step 4. PS5: check the game in your library
From your games home, open Game Library and select GTA 6. You’ll see a countdown to release. Select it, and you’ll get a list of what’s included: a checked box means that item downloads automatically. Leave everything checked and select OK (PlayStation Support).
Step 5. Xbox: install from the Store
If GTA 6 doesn’t start downloading on its own or isn’t in My games & apps, Xbox Support suggests finding it in the Store: press the Xbox button, go to Home > Store > Browse games > Search games, pick the pre-order edition and select Install. If you see a price instead of Install, don’t buy it again; check your order history at your Microsoft account first (Xbox Support).
Step 6. Know when it unlocks
On PS5, GTA 6 unlocks region by region, starting at 11:00 UTC on November 18 in New Zealand. Pick your account’s country on our release page to see the exact time; all windows are in GTA 6 release times by region. Xbox says games usually unlock shortly after midnight local time on release day; Microsoft hasn’t published a country-by-country schedule for GTA 6.
Step 7. Changed your mind? Mind the deadlines
On PlayStation you can cancel a pre-order and get a refund before release. After release, a refund is possible within 14 days of pre-ordering only if the game hasn’t started downloading, so pre-loading matters here (PlayStation Support). On Xbox you can cancel up to 10 days before launch in your Microsoft account’s order history; card payments are taken around 10 days before release, and after that you’d need to request a refund (Xbox Support).
Tips
- A PlayStation account’s country can’t be changed, and voucher codes must match it; Xbox codes for GTA 6 aren’t region-locked.
- Buy before November 20 to get the Vintage Vice City pack in any edition.
- Leave the console in rest mode with the internet on overnight before release so day-one updates download too.
