Rockstar hasn’t announced how big GTA 6 is. As of October 8, 2026, the PlayStation Store listing, the Xbox Store listing and Rockstar’s pre-order page all leave out the install size. The game comes out on November 19, and digital pre-orders can start pre-loading on November 12, so that is the first realistic moment for a real number.
Until then, the useful move is to check how much free space your console has and decide what to remove, instead of guessing.
What do the official sources say about the size?
Nothing about gigabytes. Take-Two’s pre-order announcement of June 24 gives the November 19 release date, the $79.99 price and the November 12 pre-load date. The PlayStation Store lists both editions with a 7-Day Pre-load, and the Xbox Store marks the game Optimized for Xbox Series X|S, but neither listing shows a size. Rockstar’s support page about pre-orders doesn’t either.
Treat a number from a screenshot with care. It can belong to another platform, another edition or an unfinished build. People also mix up three figures: the size of the download, the space the installer needs and the final size after patches. They can differ, so compare your free space with the requirement your console shows before the download starts.
Which GTA 6 file size numbers can you ignore?
Two numbers have circulated, and neither comes from Rockstar.
- 676.7 GB on Xbox. A screenshot posted on June 24, 2026 claimed Xbox had leaked the size. Insider Gaming traced it to a parody account and judged it likely fake, noting that the image offers an install on Xbox One, where GTA 6 isn’t coming (fact in the registry).
- 750 GB. This figure spread in September 2023 as a “leak” on social media, and Insider Gaming answered it that month, saying GTA 6 wouldn’t be that size (fact in the registry).
Insider Gaming added a guess of its own in June: it doesn’t rule out a final size of 200 to 300 GB. That is journalists speculating, not studio data. The size of the official trailer file tells you nothing either, because it holds the video frames, not the textures, audio, code and world data. A comparison with GTA 5 says as little, since the content and the way the data is packed can differ.
If you are buying an SSD now, base the choice on your own game library, not on a guess about GTA 6.
How to check and free up space on PS5
Sony’s support pages cover both places to look. Free space is under Settings > Storage. The space a game needs is on its product page: from the game in your Game Library, open the … (more) menu, choose View Product, and Sony says the minimum free space appears on the right.
- Open the GTA 6 listing in the PlayStation Store with the account you will download on, and note the required free space once it appears.
- On the console, go to Settings > Storage and check the free space on the drive where the game will be installed.
- If space is short, delete games you don’t play or move them. Sony says you keep access to deleted games and can re-download them from your game library.
- To expand storage, check that an M.2 SSD meets Sony’s requirements. A USB extended storage drive can hold PS5 games, but to play one you have to move it back to the console’s storage or an M.2 SSD.
Don’t plan to the last gigabyte: games can get patches after release, and the space they take can change.
Say the listing shows a requirement and your internal SSD has less free space. Moving one big PS5 game to a USB extended storage drive frees internal space while the data stays with you, and you move it back when you want to play it. If you play it often, an M.2 SSD is more convenient, because PS5 games can be played from it directly.
What about Xbox Series X|S?
Microsoft’s storage page says games marked Optimized for Xbox Series X|S must be installed on the console’s internal SSD or on the Storage Expansion Card to be played, and the Xbox Store marks GTA 6 that way (fact in the registry). Saved data syncs online, so when you reinstall a deleted game, your saves come back with it. The Xbox size isn’t announced either.
When will the real size appear?
The first practical check is November 12, when pre-loading opens: the store listing and the download screen on your console are where the number will show up. It could appear earlier, but no date has been announced. After release, patches can change the space the game takes, so write down two numbers: the free space required before installing and what the game actually takes afterward. We track the size on the open questions page.
A few days before November 12, check your storage and the game’s listing. A requirement that has appeared there tells you how much to free up on your own console.
