GTA 6 comes out on November 19, 2026, thirteen years after GTA 5. A lot has changed, and most of it is now on record: from Rockstar, from Take-Two and from the journalists who saw the game at Rockstar North. Each point below links to our fact registry, where the sources are listed.
Setting and map
GTA 5 took place in San Andreas around Los Santos. GTA 6 moves to the state of Leonida and its main city, Vice City. In Game Informer, Aaron Garbut of Rockstar North called Leonida the studio’s biggest map, about twice the size of GTA 5. Rob Nelson told Flow Games that Vice City alone is about twice Los Santos.
Two protagonists instead of three
GTA 5 had Michael, Franklin and Trevor. GTA 6 has Jason and Lucia, a couple. The Extended Look shows switching between them with one button, much as in GTA 5. The game also tracks their relationship status, and your choices decide whether they stay a couple.
Police
- Six wanted stars return; GTA 5 stopped at five
- A wanted level starts only if a witness, an alarm or a camera reports the crime, and the police then look for your appearance, clothes and car
- Police don’t show on the radar during a chase
Guns
GTA 5 let you carry everything at once. In GTA 6 you carry at most two handguns and two long guns, the rest stays in a car or a locker, and long guns can’t be hidden. You can also put enemies down without killing them.
Money and the body
Story missions don’t pay enough to move the story on, and cash on hand can be lost if you’re killed or arrested; money in the bank is safe. Body weight and muscle, last seen in GTA San Andreas, come back: the gym builds strength and overeating adds weight.
Driving and the world
- Driving aims for the weight of GTA 4 with the accessibility of GTA 5
- Cars can run out of fuel; GTA 5 had no fuel system
- Roads are narrower and traffic is heavier
- Rain is local, while GTA 5 had the same weather across the whole map
- Over 600,000 animations, against about 55,000 in GTA 5
- More than 170 animal species
What is gone or smaller
- No full first-person mode, though some guns aim in first person; GTA 5 added one on newer consoles
- Fewer sports minigames than in GTA 5, and no skateboarding at launch
- No online mode announced: Rockstar calls GTA 6 a single-player game, while GTA Online arrived two weeks after GTA 5
Price, rating and frame rate
The Standard Edition costs 79.99 dollars, the Ultimate Edition 99.99; GTA 5 launched at 59.99. The ESRB gave GTA 6 the same seven content descriptors as GTA 5. On consoles the game runs at 30 frames per second for now, and Rockstar hasn’t decided on a faster mode; the PS5 version of GTA 5 has a 60 fps option.
