GTA 6 frame rate on PS5: 30 fps now, 60 fps undecided

Rob Nelson of Rockstar North says GTA 6 runs at 30 frames per second on consoles for now, and a 60 fps option hasn’t been decided. What that covers, what the PS5 Pro label means and how to judge the frame rate after launch.

Whether GTA 6 gets a 60 fps mode on consoles is undecided, and Rockstar hasn’t said when it will be. Flow Games, relaying details from Davy Jones’s visit to the studio, reports that Rob Nelson of Rockstar North said every console runs the game at 30 frames per second for now, and that the technical team still has to be consulted on whether a 60 fps option comes at launch or later. Push Square reported the same, with no decision on a performance mode.

That line decides a console choice today. The PS5 Pro carries a PS5 Pro Enhanced label in the store, but buying a Pro to get 60 fps in GTA 6 would rest on a hope.

What frame rate does GTA 6 run at on PS5?

The only reference is 30 fps in the build discussed around the August showing, the Extended Look that premiered on Netflix on August 27. Flow Games says it applies to every console, the PS5 Pro and the Xbox Series S included. It describes the state of development, not a table of modes Rockstar has published for the final game.

The modes for November 19 can still change. Optimization continued after the showing, but nothing has been said about its effect on frame rate. If 60 fps decides your purchase, wait for the specifications of the final game or for measurements of the release version.

Rockstar’s Extended Look was captured on a standard PS5, which tells you the platform of the footage. A video on YouTube or Netflix doesn’t measure the game’s frame rate on your console: editing, stream compression and the player’s own settings separate a clip from the running game.

Has Rockstar promised a 60 fps mode?

No. According to Flow Games, Nelson said the technical team still has to be asked whether a 60 fps option arrives at launch or later, so the question is open (open question). The final answer will come from Rockstar or from the release build.

Headlines sometimes say GTA 6 will run “only at 30 fps” for good. The original report describes the current build: the console version shown ran at 30 fps, and the final set of modes hasn’t been announced. If Rockstar publishes a performance table, it replaces the August reference.

Frame rate is one number among several. A 30 fps frame lasts about 33.3 ms and a 60 fps frame about 16.7 ms. An average hides stutter, though, and smoothness depends on how steadily frames arrive. Without an independent test of the release version, you can’t judge dips in GTA 6 from other games.

What is known about the PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim?

The PlayStation Store listing carries a PS5 Pro Enhanced label. It reports support for Pro improvements but not which ones or whether they include 60 fps; it could be image quality, effects or another setting. Flow Games adds that nothing is known yet about improvements on the Pro.

So the answer for the PS5 Pro is the same: there is no confirmed number for release. The standard PS5 and the PS5 Slim belong to the same line, and no separate GTA 6 mode for the Slim has been announced. Don’t carry results from a video analysis of a standard PS5 over to the Pro, or promise the Slim a different frame rate without data.

If you own a PS5, there is no reason to swap consoles for a hoped-for 60 fps. When choosing a new model, compare confirmed features and other games, and hold your verdict on GTA 6 until its modes are published. Our platforms overview shows where the game is officially listed.

How to check the frame rate after launch

Open the graphics settings in the installed game and see whether there is a choice between image quality and performance. Then look for a measurement of your exact console model and the mode you will use. Comparing PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox only makes sense with the same scenes and a known game version.

A good test shows a frame-rate or frame-time graph in motion, in the city and in busy scenes, and says whether a TV feature such as VRR was on. A screenshot of a counter from a menu, or the frame rate of a video, doesn’t tell you how the game behaves in an ordinary episode.

Say two reviews both report 30 fps. One measures long drives through Vice City, the other a short clip from a quiet room. Only a test with the same scenes and a stated method is comparable. For a player that matters more than arguing about the nominal number: frequent uneven frames feel different from a steady rate with the same average.

As of October 8, only the observation of 30 fps in development is confirmed. 60 fps and the PS5 Pro details have no official specification. The next reliable marker is Rockstar naming the final modes, or reproducible measurements of the release game.
