Rockstar hasn’t said what frame rate GTA 6 will run at on Xbox Series X. The only figure comes from the Rockstar North preview: Rob Nelson told Flow Games and other outlets that the game runs at 30 fps on consoles for now, and that no decision has been made on a performance mode. He spoke about consoles in general, not the Series X in particular.
What does the 30 fps figure cover?
Flow Games reported it as applying to all consoles for now, and Push Square added that a performance mode is undecided. A headline like “GTA 6 will run at 30 fps” drops both qualifiers: the stage of development and the fact that no specific console was named.
Our PS5 frame rate article covers the same story from the PlayStation side. Here the question is what applies to the Series X.
Has Rockstar confirmed the release frame rate?
No. Rockstar Support and the Xbox listing confirm Xbox Series X|S but list no frame rate, resolution or graphics modes. The listing carries the Optimized for Xbox Series X|S label, which means the game is built for the console family and must run from internal or expansion storage; it doesn’t say how many frames per second to expect. The Series X and Series S may also get different settings, so one can’t be worked out from the other.
Will there be a 60 fps mode?
It hasn’t been announced; a 60 fps console mode is still a rumor. Other games on the Series X run at various frame rates, which shows what the console can do, but GTA 6 sets its own balance between graphics and simulation. Digital Foundry, analyzing the Extended Look, thought 60 fps on consoles is extremely unlikely. That is a forecast, not a statement from Rockstar.
Why the trailers don’t show Xbox performance
Rockstar says the Extended Look was captured on a PlayStation 5. Digital Foundry’s analysis of it found about native 1440p and a steady 30 fps on that PS5 footage. It doesn’t carry over to the Xbox version, which can differ in resolution and image quality. When a story compares Xbox with PS5, look for tests of both versions on the same scenes.
What 120 Hz and VRR mean here
Microsoft describes the Xbox Series X as able to output up to 120 fps in supported games on a suitable display. VRR helps the screen follow the frames the game sends when both support it. These are hardware capabilities; the GTA 6 mode is chosen by the game. A 120 Hz TV refreshes more often than a 60 Hz one even if the game renders fewer new frames.
How to check fps at launch
- Look in the graphics settings for a choice between quality and performance
- Compare tests of the same GTA 6 version on Series X that name the update, mode and capture setup
- Look at drops and frame pacing in a quiet drive, a busy city scene and a heavy effects moment; peak numbers say little
- Make sure the tester didn’t mix up the Series X and the Series S
