The easiest way to decide is by the console you already own and the games you already have. GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the PlayStation Store marks it PS5 Pro Enhanced, but there are no comparable figures for graphics or frame rate on any of them yet. Your library and the way you buy games are safer criteria than a performance forecast.
Which consoles is GTA 6 coming to?
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, as Rockstar Support, the PlayStation page and the Xbox page all say. The PS5 Pro is part of the PS5 family. PC isn’t on the list; a GamesBeat report points to early 2027, but Rockstar hasn’t announced it. Changes to the official platform list are tracked in our platforms article.
What is known about frame rate and graphics?
Rockstar hasn’t published frame rates, resolutions or graphics modes for the PS5, PS5 Pro, Series X or Series S. Rob Nelson said the consoles run at 30 fps for now and that there is no decision on a performance mode. The PS5 Pro Enhanced label confirms support for Pro improvements without saying what they are, and the Xbox listing’s Optimized for Xbox Series X|S label doesn’t give numbers either.
The Extended Look was captured on a PS5, and Digital Foundry’s analysis of it found about native 1440p and a steady 30 fps. That describes one video, not a comparison of four consoles. Claims like “Series X will be faster than PS5” or “the Pro will hit 60 fps” haven’t been measured. If 60 fps is your deciding factor, wait for tests after launch; our PS5 frame rate article and Xbox Series X frame rate article go into detail.
How the consoles differ for buyers
What you can check now is the hardware itself: disc drive or digital, storage, stores and controllers. Start with your library and how you usually buy games, and think about which platform your friends play on.
- PS5 with a disc drive or the Digital Edition: whether you want physical games and how you buy on PlayStation
- PS5 Pro: the extra cost, storage, and real GTA 6 tests once they exist; it makes more sense if you play many Pro-enhanced games
- Xbox Series X: the version with or without a drive, your Xbox library; the Series X supports up to 120 fps in games that offer it
- Xbox Series S: storage space and an all-digital library
For GTA 6 itself a drive doesn’t matter much: the boxed edition contains a download code, not a disc. Check storage against the rest of your library and look up the final install size close to pre-loading on November 12.
If you already own a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S
GTA 6 is coming to your console. Buying a different one for a hoped-for 60 fps can wait until there are comparable tests, and so can moving to a PS5 Pro because of the Enhanced label: the improvement is announced, not measured. Switching platforms can make sense for other games or a better way to buy them; compare the total cost over a few years.
If you are buying your first console
- Pick two models within budget and check exactly what you get: drive, storage, warranty and condition.
- Open the GTA 6 listing in the store region you will use and check the edition and payment options.
- List three to five other games you really want and see where you can buy them.
- If the decision depends on how GTA 6 looks or runs, leave it open until tests of the released game.
What to wait for
After launch there will be measurements on the same scenes and game version. A useful test names the GTA 6 version, the console model, the graphics mode and the conditions. A single peak fps number without that doesn’t tell you much. Once those tests exist, you will know whether the more expensive model is worth it on your screen.
