Playing GTA 6 with a second person isn’t something Rockstar has announced. The PlayStation Store lists the game as “1 player” and the Xbox Store lists “Single player,” and both descriptions call it a single-player experience. No co-op campaign, split-screen or online mode has been announced as of October 8, 2026.
To decide whether the game suits two people, check three things separately: the story, two controllers on one console, and future online features.
Will GTA 6 have co-op?
Only a single-player story mode is confirmed. Rockstar’s pre-order announcement calls GTA 6 a single-player experience, the FAQ on PlayStation’s game page answers the multiplayer question with the same words, and Take-Two’s Strauss Zelnick called it a single-player title at the annual meeting on September 17 (fact in the registry). A mode where one person plays Jason and another plays Lucia through the same missions at the same time hasn’t been announced.
No announcement doesn’t mean never: a publisher can change the feature list before or after release. But buying the game for a co-op run through the story would be a gamble on the current listings, which don’t offer it. Until that changes, plan for a single-player campaign.
Is there split-screen on one console with two controllers?
Split-screen hasn’t been announced for GTA 6. The PlayStation Store listing shows “1 player” and says offline play is enabled, which confirms the game works without a connection but doesn’t make it a two-player game on one TV. The Xbox listing’s capabilities show single player, achievements, presence and cloud saves, with no co-op entry. The ESRB’s rating page names In-Game Purchases as the only interactive element.
If one console is what matters, look in the official listing for explicit signs of local co-op or split-screen, or a player count of two or more. Right now both platforms describe one person at the controls. A second controller doesn’t unlock a mode by itself; the game has to support it.
“GTA 6 for two” can mean several things. Two people can pass one controller back and forth in a single-player game, which isn’t co-op. A true local mode would give both players control at once. An online mode would need its own connection rules and description. Decide which one you actually want before buying.
What about playing together online?
Rockstar hasn’t described an online mode for GTA 6 in a way that promises co-op missions. Its game page talks about Jason and Lucia, and the store listings describe one player. For a story co-op, nothing is confirmed.
GTA Online is the familiar example, and it keeps running on GTA V (fact in the registry). It shows what the fifth game does and says nothing about the rules of the new campaign. Online features in GTA 6 would need a separate Rockstar announcement. A Twitch executive said in September that he expects GTA 6 multiplayer next year, but Rockstar and Take-Two haven’t confirmed it (rumor in the registry). Our article on GTA Online in GTA 6 follows this.
So whether you can play GTA 6 online with a friend depends on which mode you mean. For a co-op campaign there is no confirmation. For a future online space, Rockstar would need to announce the date, platforms, invite support and activities. Don’t carry GTA Online features over into GTA 6 without an announcement.
Do two protagonists mean two players?
Jason and Lucia are the two central characters of one story. In games with several heroes, control can pass between them for one player, a companion can be run by the game, or a co-op mode can exist. The number of characters doesn’t tell you which. In the Extended Look, one player switches between Jason and Lucia with a single button almost anytime, and the store listings say single player.
To judge new trailers, watch whether Rockstar shows two separate player interfaces, talks about connecting with a friend, or updates the mode descriptions in the stores. A scene cut with two heroes, or a blogger’s “looks like co-op,” isn’t confirmation. If Rockstar publishes a new description, you can compare it with today’s “1 player” label.
If you need simultaneous control, watch the PlayStation and Xbox listings for a player count above one, a split-screen mention or online co-op. That is the most reliable marker if you are buying the game for two.
