How switching between Jason and Lucia works in GTA 6

GTA 6 lets you swap between its two leads, much like GTA 5. When switching is locked, when the game switches for you, what the other character does meanwhile and what the couple can do together.

GTA 6 has two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and you can switch between them as you could between the three leads of GTA 5. Rob Nelson of Rockstar North explained the details to Famitsu and IGN. This guide is based on those interviews; we’ll check it against the game after release.

  1. Step 1. Switch most of the time

Rockstar tried to keep switching as open as possible, Nelson told IGN: in his demo he switched characters at the safehouse just to sit the other one down on the couch. There will be moments in the story when it isn’t allowed.

  2. Step 2. Some missions lock you to one character

As in GTA 5, Rockstar locks switching when it wants you to see a scene through one character’s eyes, Nelson told Famitsu. An early mission where the couple fights through a high-rise housing complex used to allow free switching, but the team locked it to Jason: he’s former special forces, and it felt unnatural for Lucia to lead there.

  3. Step 3. Sometimes the game switches for you

In the bank robbery chase Nelson showed Famitsu, you start as Jason, shooting at police from the car while Lucia drives. Midway, control switches to Lucia at the wheel while Jason and Raul shoot from the back seat. Outside missions it works too: when you travel together you can switch and let your partner drive while you shoot at pursuers.

  4. Step 4. The other character has a life

Both have daily routines around the safehouse, and whoever you aren’t playing follows their own schedule, Nelson told Famitsu. After a switch they might be at home or out in the city, and you can bring the two of them together.

  5. Step 5. Spend time together

Outside missions the couple can meet up by text, walk in a park, train at the gym and rob a store together. A gym session as a pair trains both of them. You can shop for clothes and go to the salon together, and hold hands with R2. The game shows a status for their relationship, which, Nelson says, you keep up the way you would in real life: by spending time together.

  6. Step 6. Split up to lose the police

The icons under the wanted stars show what the police know, including that they’re looking for a couple. Splitting up lowers what the police know about you, Nelson told IGN. If one of them gets away, you can text the other to check they’ve shaken the cops too (police guide).

Tips

  • Train at the gym as a pair: it raises both characters’ stats at once.
  • Romance gives no gameplay bonus, Nelson says: the pair stay partners in crime either way.
  • On a chase, let your partner drive and switch to the shooter.
