Until the game is out, everything known about money in GTA 6 comes from the developers. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, went through it in detail with Famitsu and IGN. The main rule: story missions alone don’t pay enough to move the story forward, so you earn in the open world. We’ll add our own checks and screenshots after release.
How to make money in GTA 6: every method Rockstar has described
Story missions alone won’t pay for the story, so money in GTA 6 comes from the open world: store robberies, stolen cars, gang stashes, jewelry stores and small banks. Plus why you should keep your cash in the bank.

Step 1. Earn between missions
Nelson told Famitsu that earlier GTAs had a gap between missions and what you did in the open world. RDR2 narrowed it, and GTA 6 closes it: you need money from free roam to keep the story going. Plan time for side earning instead of chaining story missions.
Step 2. Rob stores without setting off the alarm
You can rob almost any shop, down to a headphone store, Nelson told IGN. In the robbery he showed Famitsu, the crew came in through the back. Kicking the door in sets off the alarm, so they used a snap gun, a lock-picking tool, to get in without a sound. Destroy the security cameras and nobody sees you; disable the security system and the alarm stays silent. Then you take the cash from the register and walk out, and nobody knows what happened.
Going in loud is riskier: if a passerby sees you getting ready to storm in with a gun, they may call the police, and officers can be waiting when you leave. A wanted level only starts when a witness, an alarm or a camera reports the crime, which is why the cameras and the alarm matter (police guide).
Step 3. Steal and sell cars
Stealing and selling cars is another way to make money, Nelson told Famitsu. Not every car is worth the trouble: in the IGN demo he passed on selling a truck because it wasn’t worth much. The WAINK phone app shows a car’s value, locks, alarm and tracker. You can’t steal cars in safe zones, such as around safehouses or outside friends’ clubs. More on theft in cars in GTA 6.
Step 4. Raid gang stashes
The map shows gang hideouts and even how much cash and how many drugs are stored there, Nelson told Famitsu. You can sneak in and take the cash or the drugs, then sell stolen drugs to a fence.
Step 5. Go bigger: jewelry stores and small banks
Jewelry stores and small banks can be robbed alone or as a pair, according to Nelson. The biggest jobs come through the story: Raul, a veteran bank robber, brings Jason and Lucia into the major heists.
Step 6. Keep your cash in the bank
GTA 6 has a bank account on top of the cash you carry. If you get Wasted or Busted, or the police or other people take you down, you lose all the cash on you, so Nelson’s advice is to deposit it somewhere safe. The phone has a banking app, and the game shows your balance.
Step 7. Know what you’ll spend it on
Early on the garage holds three vehicles; buying garages around the map lets you own more, Nelson told Famitsu. Clothes, salons and repairs cost money too. Which businesses and properties are known so far is collected in GTA 6 businesses and properties.
Tips
- Check for witnesses before a robbery: a passerby who sees your gun at the door can call the police.
- Buying and wearing a new outfit removes your heat, Nelson told IGN.
- Pay ’n’ Spray repairs and repaints a car to shake off heat.
- There are no microtransactions in single player, so money only comes from playing.
