GTA 6 has two protagonists: Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval. They’re a couple, and their stories are intertwined.
Lucia Caminos
Lucia is the first female protagonist in the main series since its early days. In the first trailer, she’s in a Leonida state prison; in the second, she walks out through the gates, where Jason is waiting for her. Lucia comes across as determined: she’s willing to take risks for the better life her mother has dreamed of since their days in Liberty City.
What Rockstar has revealed about her past is collected in Lucia’s profile.
Jason Duval
Jason is Lucia’s partner in crime and in life. In the trailers they act together, and the robbery and chase scenes suggest a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style criminal duo.
Outside missions the couple can meet up, go to the gym together and rob a store as a pair, according to Bloomberg (details).
What we know about Jason’s past is in his profile.
Switching between protagonists
In the Extended Look from August 27, 2026, you can switch between Lucia and Jason almost anytime with a single button; some missions limit the choice. More in our Extended Look recap.
Switching is for a single player: no co-op has been announced (Can you play GTA 6 with a friend?).
The other protagonist has a routine of their own, so after a switch they might be at the safehouse or out (IGN’s full interview).
