GTA 6 tells the story of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a couple in the state of Leonida, Rockstar’s version of Florida. The official setup in the PlayStation Store reads: “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida” (PlayStation Store). This page sticks to what Rockstar has said; we don’t use leaked material.
Who Jason and Lucia are
- Lucia learned to fight from her father, ended up in a Leonida state prison defending her family and got out largely through luck. She wants the good life her mother dreamed of since their days in Liberty City (Rockstar).
- Jason grew up around grifters, tried to start over in the army and ended up in the Leonida Keys, working for local drug runners. Meeting Lucia could be the best or the worst thing that ever happened to him.
The game opens with Lucia in prison: the first trailer starts there, and in the second Jason picks her up at the gates (fact). More on the pair is in Lucia and Jason.
What they want
Not an empire. Rupert Humphries, Rockstar’s head of narrative, told LOVE that their American Dream is a house and paying off their debts, not becoming billionaires (fact). He also said Jason turns to drug trafficking and bank robbery because of his circumstances, and that it’s up to the player to decide whether he had to (fact).
How the story is built
- Chapters: Rob Nelson told TroisCouleurs the story is set over chapters, with big missions moving the couple from one part of the map to the next (fact).
- Choices: IGN writes that small decisions add up and some big choices change things immediately, and that the story is built for replaying (fact). Rockstar hasn’t said whether that means more than one ending.
- Money: story missions alone don’t pay enough to move the story forward, so you also earn in the open world (fact).
- Length: Nelson finished the story plus some side content in about 80 hours; there’s no official figure (how long the story is).
When it’s set
In the present day. Rockstar says of Vice City that “we’re a long way from the ’80s” (Rockstar), and the trailers are full of phones, livestreams and social media. Rockstar hasn’t named an exact year.
What we don’t know
- How many missions there are; the figure of 300 is a rumor.
- Whether there’s more than one ending.
- Who the main antagonists are.
We’ll fill this in after launch, with spoilers behind a warning. The mission count rumor is covered in how many missions GTA 6 has, and the latest story pitch in the Launch Trailer.
