How many missions will GTA 6 have? What Rockstar has said and where 300 comes from

Rockstar hasn’t given a GTA 6 mission count. What the trailers and the Ultimate Edition list show, why 80 hours of play doesn’t convert into missions, where the 300 missions rumor started, and how to count after launch.

Rockstar hasn’t said how many missions GTA 6 has, and there is no official list of story missions. The trailers and the Extended Look show pieces of Jason and Lucia’s story, and the Ultimate Edition description names some extra content. Figures like 100 or 300 missions are guesses.

Before comparing numbers from news stories, check what they count: only required story missions, side stories, or every activity in Leonida. Even after launch, outlets that count by different rules will give different totals.

Has Rockstar given a mission count?

No. The Extended Look shows parts of missions and free roaming, and Rockstar Support lists what the Ultimate Edition adds. Neither gives a total.

The number of scenes in a video says little about the size of a campaign. One mission can be cut into several clips with drives in between, and a viewer can only guess where one mission ends and the next begins.

The closest thing to a size figure is playtime. Rob Nelson of Rockstar North said his own run took about 80 hours, including some optional goals (what the 80 hours mean). Time and mission count measure different things: a long mission can run over an hour and a short one a few minutes, so hours don’t convert into missions without the game’s own list.

Where do 300 and other estimates come from?

The 300 figure spread through posts about a supposed leak. One example on iXBT Live retells a message about hundreds of story missions that was said to have been deleted quickly. There is no list of missions behind it and no confirmation from Rockstar.

Other estimates start from GTA 5 and scale it up on the theory that a bigger world needs more missions. That ignores how a campaign is built: missions can be long or short, and a lot of play can sit outside the story. The size of the map and the second protagonist say nothing about how many missions there are.

Which missions have been shown?

The videos show situations Jason and Lucia end up in, and the campaign menu never appears. A robbery, a conversation and a chase may belong to one mission, to several, or to free roaming. Rockstar has also described how it builds them: Nelson told IGN that missions involving police and robberies are made to match the open world, and the tower-block escape from the Extended Look can be done by more than one route.

Two named pieces of content come with the Ultimate Edition: the PTT YOUNGIN$ Compound Raid and the Classic Car Collection. Rockstar lists them as part of the edition without saying whether they count as story missions. The Standard Edition has the full main story; the difference between editions is in our editions guide, and every mission announced before launch is in the missions database.

Chapters, story missions and side content

A chapter is a part of the story, and a mission is a single task inside it. On top of that there can be side stories, open-world activities and random encounters. One number counted by an unclear rule mixes all of these. To count properly you need:

  • Story missions: the list of required missions and where the campaign ends
  • Side missions: a separate list of optional stories and how they unlock
  • Ultimate Edition missions: whether they join the campaign or stay an extra
  • Activities and world events: a clear decision on whether they count at all

Fishing, a race or a store robbery can be an open-world activity, part of a mission or just a scene from a trailer. Until launch, the shown activities can be listed, but a total would be a guess.

How to check the count after launch

After November 19, 2026, the number can be checked in the game itself. For results that compare, outlets need the same method:

  1. Separate required story missions from side and repeatable ones.
  2. Match names and order against the in-game log or another list anyone can reproduce.
  3. State the game version, the date of the check and whether edition-specific missions are included.

If you see a “full mission list” before launch, check whether it gives confirmed names and a counting rule. Those two things tell you whether it is a list of story missions or a roundup of everything to do in Leonida.
