Rockstar hasn’t said how long the GTA 6 story takes without side missions. What exists is one number: Rob Nelson of Rockstar North told The New York Times that his own playthrough took about 80 hours. He finished the main story and some optional goals with consequences for the narrative, so it is his time for that run, not a separate measurement of the required story.
How many hours does GTA 6 take, going by what is known?
In a report published on August 27, 2026, The New York Times described Nelson’s 80-hour playthrough. Engadget and Vice, relaying it, say the run covered the main story and some optional goals with a bearing on the story, and Vice dates it to February. Rockstar hasn’t published a list of required missions or a separate figure for them (fact in the registry).
That tells you little about a typical player. We don’t know how long Nelson spent on optional goals, how often he stopped to explore, or how well he already knew the routes. His run shows the scale of one way through the game. It isn’t an average, a minimum or a maximum.
GTA 6 does have a confirmed release date, November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (launch calendar). Until the release build is out, nobody outside the studio can time the story for themselves.
What was included in Rob Nelson’s 80 hours?
The extra episodes in Nelson’s run were tied to the story, but nothing in the reports says you need all of them for the ending. Which ones he picked isn’t known either.
A playthrough of an open world depends on habits. Some players follow the next mission marker, and others stop to explore Leonida, race or take random encounters. Two players who both reach the credits will have different clocks. A fair comparison needs the same counting rules and a statement of which activities are included.
News items often present 80 hours as the length of the required story, while the original report describes the story plus some optional goals. For what Rockstar has already shown, see our Extended Look recap; a trailer doesn’t measure the length of a campaign.
Can 80 hours be called the length of the campaign?
No. It is the time of one run that included side content. “The GTA 6 story is 80 hours long” adds something Nelson didn’t measure separately. The opposite conclusion, that the required story is shorter by a set number of hours, would also need data nobody has.
- Required story only: the missions needed to finish the story. No separate length has been given.
- Story plus some chosen side goals: the main line and part of the optional content. About 80 hours in Nelson’s run.
- Full completion: every action needed to close out the game. The criteria and the time are unknown.
If your question is how many hours GTA 6 takes, first decide which of these you mean. For someone who wants to reach the ending, Nelson’s figure is only an example of a run with extra goals. For someone who wants to explore everything, it is no ceiling either: the reports don’t say the studio finished every activity.
For context, Engadget cites HowLongToBeat: most players took about 51.5 hours to finish GTA V’s main story and some side quests, and completionists averaged about 89.5 hours. Those are GTA V’s figures and only a rough benchmark. Map size and the number of missions are different things, and length depends on how missions are built, the pace of dialogue, travel, difficulty and the player’s choices.
Rumors have gone much further. Insider Gaming dismissed a 2023 claim of a story lasting at least 400 hours as laughable.
When will an exact playtime appear?
After release, reviews will give measured times with a stated method. A useful review names the platform and the game version and says whether cutscenes, failed attempts, free roaming and optional missions are counted. A time without that description again describes someone else’s run.
After launch, compare results in three separate categories: the end of the required story, the story with chosen side goals, and full completion. Note the time to the credits and which missions you did. Then numbers from different players can be set side by side. A single counter without a route description leaves the same question as today’s 80 hours.
