Yes. GTA 6 comes out on Xbox Series X|S, and that includes the Series S. The Xbox Store marks the game Optimized for Xbox Series X|S (fact). Rockstar hasn’t said what resolution it runs at on the smaller console.
What’s official
- Platforms: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no separate list of supported Xbox models.
- Frame rate: Rob Nelson said the game runs at 30 fps on all consoles for now, with no decision on a performance mode (fact).
- Resolution: not announced for any Xbox. Digital Foundry’s 1440p measurement applies to a standard PS5.
How the Series S compares
- Xbox Series S: a 4-teraflop graphics chip with 20 compute units, an 8-core Zen 2 processor at 3.6 GHz with SMT, 10 GB of GDDR6 and a 512 GB or 1 TB SSD (Xbox).
- Xbox Series X: 12 teraflops and 16 GB of memory (Xbox).
- PS5: 10.3 teraflops and 16 GB.
The processors are nearly the same, and Digital Foundry says the processor is what limits GTA 6 to 30 fps (fact). The Series S has about a third of the Series X’s graphics power, though, so our estimate is that it holds the same 30 fps target at a lower resolution than PS5 and Series X. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed this. More on Xbox frame rates is in GTA 6 FPS on Xbox Series X.
The real issue: 512 GB
Microsoft says Optimized games must be installed on the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card to be played (fact). The base Series S has 512 GB, and part of it is taken by the system. GTA 6’s size isn’t known (how big GTA 6 is), so clear as much space as you can before the pre-load on November 12.
If the 210 GB reported by a PlayStation Store database tracker is right, GTA 6 will take about 40% of the base console’s 512 GB before the system’s share (rumor).
An all-digital console and the boxed game
The Series S has no disc drive, and it doesn’t need one for GTA 6: the box holds a download code (Rockstar Support), and Rockstar says Xbox codes aren’t region-locked (fact). Comparing consoles for the game? See best console for GTA 6.
