On October 7, 2026, The Verge reported that Xbox has secured game streaming rights for GTA 6, which would let Xbox Cloud Gaming stream the game from launch. The same day Xbox’s chief strategy officer, Matthew Ball, replied on X that GTA 6 will not stream exclusively or to PC. Rockstar hasn’t commented.
What The Verge reported
Tom Warren wrote that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told staff at an all-hands meeting that Microsoft was getting ready to do something around GTA 6 that other platform holders aren’t doing. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans told The Verge this meant a deal for streaming rights. How long the deal runs isn’t clear. The story first called the deal exclusive, and The Verge updated it after Ball’s reply.
Rockstar hasn’t announced a PC version, and The Verge notes that a streaming deal would normally let Xbox market its cloud service to PC players who don’t own a console.
What Xbox said
Ball wrote that the excitement around GTA 6 and Xbox had led to some misreporting, that Xbox looks forward to launching the game on November 19, and that “the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC” (fact in the registry). His wording doesn’t say whether Xbox has streaming rights at all. The Verge reads the denial as meaning the deal covers only streaming on Xbox consoles, and says the web and app versions of Xbox Cloud Gaming may not be able to stream GTA 6. That is The Verge’s reading, not Xbox’s (what The Verge reported).
What it means for you
- PC: GTA 6 still has no PC version. It launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, and Xbox says it won’t stream to PC either (Is GTA 6 coming to PC?)
- Game Pass: streaming rights are a separate matter from a place in the catalog, and Xbox hasn’t announced GTA 6 for Game Pass (Will GTA 6 be on Xbox Game Pass?)
- The store: the Xbox Store listing shows Xbox Series X|S as the only platform to play on and doesn’t mention cloud play
The cloud service around it
According to The Verge, the report comes about a month after Microsoft announced changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming. From November, streaming hours are capped at 15 hours for Game Pass Ultimate, 10 for Premium and 5 for Essential, and Microsoft opens a pay-as-you-go option for people without a subscription. How those limits would apply to GTA 6 hasn’t been said.
We keep this on our open questions page until Rockstar or Xbox says more.
